Diplomats, government officials, and employees who will perform work for international organizations in the United States must obtain G visas. Any foreign official or worker who will work for NATO in the United States must obtain a NATO visa.

In order to obtain a G-1, G-2, G-3 or G-4 visa an applicant must be must be making a trip to the United States to attending meetings at, or work at a designated international organization. If an applicant is entitled to a G visa, by law they must receive a G visa. There are five sub categories of G visas. G-1 visas are given to permanent mission members of a recognized government to a designated international organization and their immediate family members. G-2 visas are given to representatives of a recognized government traveling temporarily to the United States to attend meetings of a designated international organization and their immediate family members. G-3 visas are given to representatives of non-recognized or non-member governments and their immediate family members. G-4 visas are given to individuals who come to the United States to take up an appointment at a designated international organization, including the United Nations, and their immediate family members. G-5 visas may be given to personal employees or domestic workers of a G-1-G-4 visa holders.
Those who wish to receive a NATO 1-6 visa, the applicant must be traveling to the United States under the applicable provision of the agreement on the Status of NATO or the Protocol on the Status of International Military Headquarters set up pursuant to the North Atlantic Treaty.
International Organization and other NATO officials and employees traveling to the United States in order to engage in official duties or other activities must enter the United States with a G1-G4 or a NATO 1-6 visa. These officials are not allowed to come in to the United States on any other Visa category, or under the Visa Waiver Program. United States law requires any international organization and NATO officials and employees and their qualified immediate family members to receive G1-G6 or NATO 1-7 visas if they are entitled, exceptions to this law are very limited.
Travel purposes that are not permitted on G or NATO visas include Heads of States or Governments and Officials coming to perform non-governmental functions. Heads of State or government are exceptions and must always travel to the United States with a A-1 visa regardless of their travel purposes. Officials coming to perform non-governmental functions do not qualify for G or NATO visas and applicants must apply for the appropriate visa category for their specific travel purpose.
